Herrings

Herrings is a team that participates in online hunts. The team started using the Herrings name in 2016 for the Mezzacotta Puzzle Hunt as Octarine Herrings, which they won. The team is composed of alumni from Brown University, many who were introduced to puzzles by Dan Katz. For the MIT Mystery Hunt, the team hunts with The Providence Transplantations.

History

Originally, most Herrings teams were of the form <color> Herrings, referring to the Red Herring element often referenced in hunt puzzles. The original team name used the fictional color Octarine from Discworld, a reference to the hunt theme. Later, the team also adopted the use of the 🎏 emoji as a calling card. The team also maintains an "achievement tab" for each hunt, with fun achievements such as "McFly a puzzle" or "take a screenshot of us ahead of Mystik Spiral".
