Screen Debuts is a puzzle from the Creative Pictures Studios round of the 2020 MIT Mystery Hunt, presented as a diagramless barred cryptic.
Puzzle Elements[edit | edit source]
Cryptic Crossword - The puzzle is presented as a diagramless cryptic, featuring two sets of clues (Across and Down) and a 13x13 grid (with rows and columns numbered).
Fakeout - Surprise! The clues aren't solvable as actual cryptic clues, and the numbers don't fit with anything in particular.
Hint in Title - "Debuts" in the title hints toward...
Initialization - ...taking the first letter of every word in a clue. Notice that they spell a word—specifically, a color-like word (representing one of black, brown, or red). The clue in Row 10, for example, spells LIGHTLESS (black).
Paint-By-X - Each clue can be associated with a square—one coordinate given by its numbering, the other by the enumeration. Painting that square the color given by the clue draws out the answer.
