Edric's 2020 Treasure Hunt (the third in the series) went live at 8:00 p.m. EDT on the first Friday in April, 2020. The hunt was comprised of a linear series of six puzzles; solving one puzzle would lead the solver to the next, until the end of the hunt was reached. The nature of the six puzzles were:
- A paper-manipulation puzzle
- A hexagonal word-fill puzzle
- A text-based puzzle
- A cipher/image identification puzzle
- A math-based "follow the directions" puzzle
- Another math-based puzzle
Deviations from tradition[edit | edit source]
In the first two years of these treasure hunts, the .pdf file provided at the launch of the hunt provided only the first puzzle of the hunt and nothing more. In 2020, however, the initial .pdf actually "seeded" some of the information which would be used in puzzles four, five, and six. That initial information wasn't sufficient on its own, however, to solve those puzzles. It wasn't until solvers reached subsequent stages of the hunt that they would receive the additional information or context necessary to make sense of the earlier information.
The text-based puzzle in the middle of the hunt also served to provide three "bonus" puzzles (whose solutions were independent of the hunt's actual solution path). The launch page of the hunt stated in part, "Note: This hunt contains a few “extras” along the way, including the appearance of three bonus puzzles you can solve! (These won’t help you finish the hunt, but they’re fun to figure out!) I just didn’t want these to turn out to be red herrings to you."
