The Mathemagicians is a Discord-based online Team that usually participates in Mystery Hunts as well as smaller online hunts. The team is considered open to new members joining it.
The team relies heavily on bots, automation and spreadsheeting functions, and has a publicly linked team bot as well as public team invites. The team also frequently archive-solves older hunts, including MIT Mystery Hunts.
History[edit | edit source]
It started in 2021, shortly before MIT Mystery Hunt 2021. The team originated as Team Arithmancy, offshooting from /r/Arithmancy, a Harry Potter themed subreddit that solves non-hunt puzzles.
The team logo is derived from the original colours and logo of r/Arithmancy. The logo featured the Golden Egg, a mechanical dragon egg from the Harry Potter series. This was a reference to "Dragon Eggs", the name of the r/harrypotter contest that led to the formation of r/Arithmancy.
In 2022, the team changed its name to The Mathemagicians and hunts under that name since.
For MIT Mystery Hunt 2022, Spin My Hovercraft hunted as part of the team. For MIT Mystery Hunt 2023, Vehemence and Cheatahs hunted with the team. For MIT Mystery Hunt 2024, Cheatahs, Team Madness, and QUWUbits hunted with the team.
