Puzzle hunts are events where teams or individuals compete to solve a series of puzzles. The format of puzzle hunts can vary considerably, but most hunts are structured so that each puzzle answer is a word or phrase (which can often be verified against some answer checking mechanism), puzzles unlock sequentially (either via the solving of prior puzzles or the elapsing of time), and rounds or hunts culminate in metapuzzles (which combine individual puzzles answers together in novel ways).
Puzzle hunts may range in scale from a small group of puzzles and a metapuzzle that is solvable by an individual in a single sitting, to the behemoth that is the MIT Mystery Hunt, one of the oldest and most complex puzzle hunts in the world comprising well over one hundred puzzles and attracting thousands of individuals who compete in teams of up to 150 people over the course of an entire weekend.
